Renowned sports reporter, editor, and presenter with DAAR Communications Plc, Ed-Emmanuel Bassey, has lost his mother, Madam Grace Bassey (née Animi Manas Thompson).
The community leader and astute businesswoman passed away at the age of 89.
Announcing her passing on behalf of the Bo Namondo family of Odukpani, Ikpai, and the Nkonib (Ikot Ansa) Qua Clans in Calabar, Cross River State, the DAAR Communications broadcast journalist paid an emotional tribute to the late matriarch, describing her as his “biggest ally in life’s struggles.”
Reflecting on his childhood, Bassey—a key sports presenter and newscaster on Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower 100.5 FM—recalled his mother’s unconditional love, protective nature, and resilience.
”She obviously knew how to draw a line between punishment and protection for her children,” Bassey shared, recounting instances where she shielded him from severe discipline, including a near-drowning incident during his early childhood. “She grabbed and covered me protectively like a hen covers her eggs.”
Born to an Ijaw merchant fisherman from Nembe/Brass in Bayelsa State and a Balondo mother from Southwest Cameroon, Madam Grace Bassey was known for her strong work ethic and deep community ties. Though trained as a seamstress, her drive to alleviate hunger led her to set up a small food venture in Ekondo Titi, Southwest Cameroon.
Her compassion earned her the moniker “Helep Mother” among locals, as she frequently provided free meals or extended credit to less privileged residents. The nickname eventually inspired the name of her popular eatery, Helep Mother Resto.
”On these evidence, it is clear that even though she was not a known philanthropist, her deeds were highly philanthropic within the context of giving to inspire life and humanity,” Bassey noted.
The family, led by the eldest son, Chief Joseph Edet Bassey, is expected to announce funeral arrangements following upcoming family consultations. She is survived by eight children, grandchildren, and extended family members.
