President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football to fix systemic governance failures following the resignation of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau.
Speaking through a statement released on August 27, 2026, by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, the President stressed that Nigeria’s popular sport must overcome long-standing structural weaknesses. Gusau announced his exit alongside board members at a press conference in Abuja, citing his love for the country while paving the way for administrative restructuring after recent tournament qualification setbacks.
President Tinubu noted that while other sports sectors have advanced under the re-established National Sports Commission (NSC), football has lagged behind. He emphasized that Nigeria must match its exceptional athletic talent, passion, and resources with transparent institutions and sustained international performance.
Under the presidential directive, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission will collaborate with the NFF Secretariat to maintain daily operational continuity and lead a broad consultative reform process. The reorganization will focus on improving governance, domestic competitions, youth development pathways, and financial accountability.
The Presidency confirmed that all transitional steps will be conducted in alignment with FIFA and CAF frameworks to safeguard Nigeria’s international obligations.
