The Ondo State Police Command has placed security agencies on high alert ahead of the alleged “7/7” cult celebrations, warning that any unlawful gathering, procession, initiation or violent activity linked to cult groups will be met with decisive law enforcement action.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Command disclosed that intelligence reports indicated that some cult groups were planning activities to mark the annual “7/7” celebration, a development it said could threaten public peace, endanger lives and disrupt normal activities across the state.
To forestall any breakdown of law and order, the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, directed the immediate deployment of massive security personnel and operational assets to identified flashpoints and strategic locations throughout Ondo State.
The deployment includes operatives of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), State Intelligence Department, Mobile Police Force, as well as officers from Area Commands and Divisional Police Headquarters.
According to the Command, the security teams have been mandated to intensify visibility policing, intelligence gathering, surveillance, stop-and-search operations and targeted raids aimed at preventing any cult-related activities or other criminal acts.
The police stressed that the Command would not tolerate unlawful assemblies, public displays of cult insignia, armed processions, or any conduct capable of creating fear or panic among residents. It warned that anyone found violating the law would be arrested and prosecuted.
Parents and guardians were urged to caution their children and wards against joining or participating in cult-related activities, while owners of hotels, lounges, event centres, bars and recreational facilities were advised not to allow their premises to be used for gatherings associated with cult groups. The Command warned that anyone found aiding or harbouring criminal elements would face prosecution.
The Commissioner also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, transport unions, school authorities and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or gatherings to the nearest police station or other security agencies.
Reassuring residents of adequate security, the police urged the public to continue their lawful activities without fear, emphasizing that the Command remains fully prepared to respond swiftly to any attempt by criminal elements to disrupt the peace and security of Ondo State.
