The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced three convicted terrorists to death by hanging after they pleaded guilty to terrorism-related offences in the ongoing mass trial of terror suspects being prosecuted by the Federal Government.
The convicts , Danladi Lawal, also known as Dankawu, Abdullahi Mohammed and Mohammed Gulama Shaibu , were handed the death penalty in separate proceedings presided over by Justices James Omotosho and Salim Ibrahim.
Danladi Lawal, 33, pleaded guilty to a five-count charge brought against him by the Federal Government through the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN). Justice Omotosho sentenced him to 30 years imprisonment on one count, 15 years on another, life imprisonment on two counts and death by hanging on the count relating to kidnapping and terrorism.
According to court records, Lawal and accomplices still at large abducted an elderly man in Katsina State in 2020, held him in a forest hideout for four days and demanded a ransom of N950,000 from his family, an act the court held caused fear and insecurity within the community.
Justice Salim Ibrahim also sentenced Abdullahi Mohammed and Mohammed Gulama Shaibu to death by hanging after both men admitted guilt to the terrorism charges preferred against them. Shaibu received an additional life sentence on a separate count.
The convictions are part of the Federal Government’s ongoing terrorism trials aimed at bringing perpetrators of violent crimes to justice and strengthening efforts to combat insecurity across the country.
