Co-hosts Mexico have become the first nation to secure a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging South Korea 1-0 in their Group A encounter.
A second-half strike from midfielder Luis Romo proved decisive as El Tri sealed victory and guaranteed qualification to the Round of 32. The goal came after an error involving South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu, allowing Romo to pounce and hand the hosts a crucial win.
The victory gives Mexico six points from two matches following their opening win over South Africa, ensuring they finish among the teams advancing from Group A.
Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel also played a key role, producing important saves late in the game to preserve the slender advantage as South Korea mounted pressure in search of an equaliser.
The achievement marks the first time since 2002 that Mexico have topped a World Cup group, while also becoming the first country to book a place in the expanded 32-team knockout phase of the tournament.
Mexico will conclude their group campaign against the Czech Republic before returning to Mexico City for their Round of 32 clash
