The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed the killing of eight of its personnel and a civilian driver in an ambush by gunmen along the Okpella-Agenebode road in Edo State.
The incident occurred on Friday, September 5, 2025, at about 10:30pm, when armed men attacked a convoy escorting a Chinese national from BUA Cement Company, Okpella.
According to an NSCDC statement issued on Saturday, the attackers killed nine people, including the officers and driver, and abducted the Chinese expatriate.
“Twelve persons were on escort duty at the time of the attack. Sadly, eight NSCDC personnel attached to the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Department and one civilian driver were killed. The Chinese national was kidnapped during the incident,” the Corps said.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary, while three surviving victims are receiving treatment at a medical facility. Among those killed was Chief Corps Assistant Oluwatosin Sunday of the Ondo State Command.
Describing the killings as a “grievous loss,” the NSCDC expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, their colleagues, and the Corps community, saluting the officers’ bravery in the line of duty.
“The Corps deeply mourns this loss and reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding lives, national assets, and infrastructure. We urge the public to remain calm as security agencies intensify efforts to rescue the kidnapped victim and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the statement added.
The Corps concluded by praying for the repose of the slain officers’ souls.
