Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has projected that the newly inaugurated Industrial Leather Hub in Matori, Mushin, will generate annual export earnings of over $250 million (₦387.5 billion) once it becomes fully operational.
Speaking at the commissioning of the facility on Saturday, Sanwo-Olu described the project as a landmark initiative that would position Lagos as the leather logistics capital of West Africa.
According to him, the hub underscores Lagos State’s commitment to supporting industrial growth, creating jobs, and boosting non-oil exports in line with Nigeria’s drive to diversify its economy.
“This project is not just about leather production; it is about transforming Lagos into a key player in the global leather value chain. The hub will create opportunities for our local entrepreneurs, artisans, and exporters while enhancing foreign exchange earnings for the state and the country at large,” the governor said.
The governor also noted that the hub will serve as a one-stop centre for processing, manufacturing, and exporting leather goods, thereby reducing dependence on imports and strengthening Nigeria’s competitive edge in the global market.
Industry stakeholders present at the inauguration commended the initiative, describing it as a game-changer that could place Lagos at the forefront of Africa’s industrial leather production and export market.
