The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has unveiled Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, son of former Kano State governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election.
The announcement was confirmed on Monday by the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Dr. Habibu Saleh Mohammed, who disclosed that Gwarzo formally presented Mustapha as the party’s deputy governorship candidate after consultations with party stakeholders.
Mustapha Kwankwaso, a former Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Kano State, resigned from the cabinet of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf following the political realignments that reshaped the state’s political landscape.
Gwarzo, a former deputy governor of Kano State, and Mustapha both served in the Yusuf administration before their exit. Their pairing is expected to strengthen the influence of the Kwankwasiyya movement and boost the NDC’s preparations ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
Political observers say the choice of Mustapha, who is regarded as one of the prominent younger figures within the Kwankwasiyya political family, could intensify the battle for Kano Government House in the next general election.
The development marks another significant step in the ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections in Kano State.
