The Redeemed Christian Church of God has dismissed circulating social media claims alleging that its General Overseer, Enoch Adeboye, participated in a political protest against the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The clarification follows renewed online controversy driven largely by users linked to the “Obidient” movement, who circulated an old photograph claiming that the respected cleric had openly joined protests during Jonathan’s tenure but has remained silent on current economic hardship and insecurity under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the church described the interpretation of the image as misleading and taken out of context.
It explained that the photograph in question was captured during a nationwide peace walk organized by Christian groups, in line with a directive associated with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at the time, and not a partisan political protest.
According to the church, the event was strictly a faith-based initiative aimed at promoting peace and national unity, rather than an endorsement of or opposition to any political administration.
The RCCG further stressed that Pastor Adeboye has consistently maintained a non-partisan stance throughout his ministry, focusing on spiritual leadership rather than political engagement.
The controversy has continued to generate heated reactions online, with supporters and critics trading arguments over the cleric’s public visibility on national issues and the interpretation of past religious gatherings.
