A tragic road accident on Monday morning along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway claimed the life of an unidentified footballer after a Mercedes-Benz C300 collided with a bus in the Magboro area of Ogun State.
The fatal crash took place along the Magboro axis in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area. Officials from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) alongside police officers confirmed the fatality at the scene, revealing that the tragedy was triggered by a hit-and-run driver.
According to an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity, the deceased and other members of his football academy were travelling in two separate vehicles to attend a match when a trailer crossed over from the opposing side of the road and initiated the collision.
”We were going for a match. We just saw a trailer cross from the other side and hit this Benz, then it hit the bus. Only one person died in the car while the rest of us survived,” the eyewitness recalled. “Everyone in the bus is fine, too. The trailer driver fled with his vehicle afterwards.”
The Mercedes-Benz, bearing registration number SMK-878KX, was severely crushed in the impact. Security and traffic management authorities remained at the scene to manage traffic flow and evacuate the damaged vehicle from the busy expressway.
Investigations are ongoing to track down the fleeing trailer driver and identify the deceased player.
