The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The announcement was made by the Federal Ministry of Interior on behalf of the Federal Government, urging Muslims across the country to use the festive period to pray for peace, unity, and continued progress of the nation.
The government also encouraged Nigerians to embrace the values of sacrifice, tolerance, love, and national cohesion which the Eid-el-Kabir celebration symbolizes.
Eid-el-Kabir, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant celebrations in the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide through prayers, acts of charity, and the symbolic slaughtering of animals.
The declaration of the two-day holiday is expected to allow Muslim faithful ample time to celebrate with family members and loved ones across the country.
Security agencies and relevant authorities are also expected to intensify efforts to ensure peaceful celebrations nationwide, especially at prayer grounds, markets, motor parks, and other public places during the holiday period.
