The outgoing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has formally handed over the leadership of the electoral body to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as Acting National Chairman.
Agbamuche-Mbu, the oldest serving National Commissioner at INEC, assumes the role in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive chairman by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The transition follows the expiration of Prof. Yakubu’s tenure as INEC Chairman, during which he oversaw two general elections and several off-cycle polls across the country.
As Acting Chairman, Agbamuche-Mbu is expected to steer the commission’s affairs and ensure continuity in its operations until a new chairman is officially appointed and confirmed.
Sources within the commission described her appointment as a move to maintain administrative stability while the presidency finalizes the selection process for Yakubu’s successor.
