The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a stern warning to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) against pursuing what it described as a dangerous gamble to eliminate political competition through reckless judicial maneuvers.
In a blistering press statement, the opposition party urged the ruling party and the presidency to refrain from destabilizing the nation’s democracy out of desperation to retain power following Justice Peter Lifu’s ruling invalidating the ADC leadership and the candidacy of Atiku Abubakar.
“We warn the APC: do not play with fires you cannot control,” said Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC National Publicity Secretary. “The peace and stability of Nigeria are bigger than the ambition of any president or political party. Nobody should be so desperate to retain power that they are prepared to put the entire country at risk. This is not the time to play silly games with the stability of this country.”
The party emphasized that the presidency is not an inheritance and challenged the ruling party to face the electorate in a free and fair contest rather than hiding behind court orders.
”Nigeria belongs to Nigerians, not to the APC,” Abdullahi added. “If the President thinks he has performed well in office, why is he afraid of competition? If the APC thinks that its policies and candidates are popular, why don’t they subject themselves to free and fair elections?”
The opposition reaffirmed that millions of citizens who turned out for their Sokoto rally will not sit in silence while their democratic right to choose their leaders is stripped away through questionable judicial rulings.
Legal proceedings are already underway to overturn the verdict at the Court of Appeal.
