The Omoluabi Parapo Conservative Group has raised strong objections to the recently announced 500,000 barrels per day (BPD) refinery project in Igbotiri, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.
In a statement signed by its representative, Ọbabìnrin Adérónkẹ́ Okeleye, and addressed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the group described the refinery as a laudable initiative but faulted the structure of the agreement, warning that it does not safeguard the long-term interests of the people of Ilaje, Ondo State, and the wider Yorùbá nation.
According to the group, the project was awarded to Backbone Infrastructure Nigeria Limited, a company they claim lacks both the technical expertise and prior experience required for a project of such scale.
“After due investigation, we found out they have no proven competence in constructing infrastructure of this magnitude. Which begs the question: why them?” the statement queried.
The group also criticized Ondo State’s 20 percent equity share, arguing that it makes the state the least beneficiary in terms of future revenue.
They further expressed concern that the company’s board has no representation from Ondo State or Ilaje, raising fears that the people’s interests may be sidelined once the current administration leaves office.
“The refinery, as presently structured, does not serve the long-term interests of our people. We therefore demand an immediate reversal of this MOU and the convening of a stakeholder meeting to chart a just and inclusive path forward,” Okeleye said.
The group reaffirmed its support for industrial development but insisted that such projects must prioritize local participation, equity, and accountability.
