As the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season kicks off today, one of the young players to watch out for is Rivers United’s new signing, Ogbu Ogechukwu Emmanuel, a versatile defender who can operate both as a left-back and centre-back.
Ogbu 19 years old, wearing jersey number 12, arrives at the Port Harcourt club from Sunshine Stars, where his solid defensive displays earned him recognition as one of the most promising young defenders in the league. Known for his skill, composure on the ball, and intelligent reading of the game, the youngster is being tipped as a future star of Nigerian football.
Rivers United, managed by former Super Eagles legend Finidi George, are counting on Ogbu’s energy and versatility to bolster their defence as they begin another push for domestic glory and continental success.
The Pride of Rivers narrowly missed out on the NPFL title last season, finishing second behind Remo Stars, but secured a place in the CAF Champions League.
“Ogbu is a brilliant young player with so much potential. He is committed and ready to contribute to our ambitions this season,” a club source revealed ahead of the new campaign.
The 2025/26 NPFL season kicks off in style with defending champions Remo Stars hosting Rivers United in the opening fixture at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta, on Friday. Fans will be eager to see if Ogbu can mark his debut with a commanding performance as Rivers United aim to set the tone for a successful season.
