The 10th Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) Western Zone Golf Championship has officially teed off at the Crosscreek Golf Club, Ilado, attracting over 130 golfers from across the country.
The four-day championship, themed “Golfing with the Stars”, features 60 female golfers and 70 male golfers competing for top honours. According to Mrs Evelyn Balogun, Vice President of LGAN Western Zone, the tournament is designed to encourage more women to embrace golf while promoting physical fitness, mental wellness, and social networking.
“Golf helps women improve fitness, relieve stress, and enjoy nature. Women should not be limited to household roles,” Balogun told journalists in Akure. She added that players in the ladies’ handicap 0–28 category would tee off on Friday, followed by cultural events and social interactions.
The competition will continue on Saturday with another round of play before a disco night for relaxation. On Sunday, the top 45 ladies will play in the final alongside male golfers in the handicap 0–28 category. The tournament will end with an award and appreciation ceremony to honour winners, sponsors, and supporters.
First Vice President of LGAN, Dr Lami Ahmed, noted that this is the first time a ladies’ open golf event is being hosted in Ondo State. She commended the zonal leadership for making the event possible and said the championship will foster unity, promote tourism, and boost the state’s economy.
Founder of Crosscreek Golf Club, Mr Sola Abidakun, welcomed participants and encouraged them to explore Ondo’s tourist attractions. Club Captain, Mr Isaac Shedowo, estimated the tournament could inject over ₦200 million into the local economy.
Opening-day activities included a ceremonial tee-off, flag hoisting, a visit to an orphanage, and a cocktail reception. The Crosscreek ladies (handicap 29–36) opened the competition with the first round of play.
The LGAN Western Zone Golf Championship is not only a major sporting event but also a platform to showcase Ondo State’s hospitality, tourism potential, and growing golf culture.
