Panic erupted at the Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, Lagos, on Monday after a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted beneath a vehicle exploded, leaving one person injured.
The blast, which occurred in the Oke Mushin area, triggered a swift response from security agencies, with operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit cordoning off the scene and launching an investigation.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, who visited the site, disclosed that preliminary findings indicated that the explosive device had been concealed under the passenger side of the vehicle and detonated when the owner started the engine.
According to the police chief, the victim sustained minor injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he is receiving treatment and is said to be in stable condition.
Security operatives subsequently carried out a comprehensive sweep of the area and recovered remnants of the device for forensic analysis, while confirming that no additional explosives were found.
The incident caused anxiety among traders and residents in the busy commercial district, but police authorities assured the public that the area had been secured and urged citizens to remain calm and continue with their normal activities.
Investigations are ongoing to determine those behind the attack and the circumstances surrounding the planting of the device.
Meanwhile the Lagos State Police Command has assured residents of Mushin of safety following an explosion scare that left one person injured.
The command in a Monday statement on X disclosed that the assurance followed an on-the-spot assessment carried out by the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, following the report of the explosion.
