Fresh political tensions have gripped Osun State following reported gun attacks in parts of the state, with Governor Ademola Adeleke and the All Progressives Congress (APC) exchanging accusations over the violence ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.
Addressing journalists in Osogbo, Governor Adeleke alleged that suspected thugs unleashed sporadic shootings in Ile-Ife and attacked residents in Owode-Ede, leaving several people injured.
He described the incidents as deliberate provocations and called on the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to intervene and prevent further escalation.
The governor warned that persistent attacks could undermine the peaceful conduct of the election and urged security agencies to ensure that voters are allowed to make their choices without intimidation.
However, the APC dismissed the allegations and accused thugs allegedly loyal to the Accord Party of attacking supporters of its governorship candidate. The party claimed that campaign buses were vandalised in Owode-Ede and that several of its supporters sustained injuries during the attacks.
While confirming reports of the shootings, the Osun State Police Command said investigations were ongoing and stressed that no political party had been linked to the incidents. Security agencies, according to the police, are gathering intelligence to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The latest violence has heightened concerns over security in Osun State as political activities intensify ahead of the governorship election.
