Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has instituted a ₦5 billion defamation suit against his former ally and campaign spokesman, Kenneth Okonkwo, over alleged false and malicious statements.
Through his lawyer, Chief Alex Ejesieme (SAN), Obi demanded a retraction and public apology over remarks allegedly made by Okonkwo during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, which he said had damaged his reputation.
The suit followed claims by Okonkwo that Obi and some South-East political leaders demanded ₦10 million from aspirants seeking elective positions, allegations the former Labour Party presidential candidate denied.
Responding to the lawsuit, Okonkwo maintained that he stood by his statements and urged Obi to proceed with the legal action.
The actor turned politician further said that if Obi needed financial support for his anticipated 2027 presidential campaign, he should approach him directly rather than demand ₦5 billion in damages.
Okonkwo also claimed that he had previously provided financial assistance during the 2023 general election campaign, including paying for flights and hotel accommodation while accompanying Obi on campaign trips under the Labour Party platform.
The exchange marks the latest chapter in the souring relationship between the two former political associates who worked closely during the 2023 presidential election.
