Nigeria was plunged into mourning on Tuesday following the announcement of the passing of elder statesman, distinguished educationist, and National Leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who died at the age of 100. The revered leader, widely regarded as one of the last remaining titans of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s progressive political family, passed away peacefully at his residence in Akure, Ondo State.
In an official statement issued from the State House, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed deep grief over the loss, describing Baba Fasoranti as an icon of integrity, discipline, and principled leadership. President Tinubu noted that Pa Fasoranti’s century on earth was a masterclass in selflessness and commitment to the progress of the Yoruba people and Nigeria’s unity.
Recalling his visit to the elder statesman in 2022 to seek his blessing before contesting the presidency, President Tinubu noted that Baba had declared he would become President in his lifetime, a prayer God answered. The President added that while he had hoped Papa would remain to see the full dawn of economic growth and prosperity into his second term, the nation gives immense thanks for a long life defined by grace, honour, and public service.
Following the announcement, Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, led a high-powered state delegation to the residence of the late leader in Akure to pay their respects. Accompanied by Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami, Chief of Staff Prince Segun Omojuwa, Head of Service Chief Segun Odusanya, and members of the State Executive Council, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the deceased as an epitome of humility, kindness, and wisdom.
He highlighted that even at the age of 100, Pa Fasoranti remained mentally sharp and actively provided guidance on government decisions, stressing that the state was celebrating a life well lived rather than mourning a loss.
Speaking on behalf of the family, the Secretary to the Ondo State Government, Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti, disclosed that his father had long maintained a quiet covenant with God to depart upon reaching age 100 and had repeatedly instructed his children not to weep when he passed. He stated that while filling his father’s shoes presents a vast challenge, the family remains deeply grateful for his legacy of firmness, resilience, hard work, and devotion.
Notable dignitaries present during the condolence visit included former Deputy Governor Alhaji Abdulazeez Oluboyo, the Olu of Ilu Abo, Oba Olu Falae, the Iresi of Osi, Oba Samuel Olajide Okunato, Akure South Local Government Chairman Hon. Gbenga Fasua, and Afenifere chieftains Chief Femi Aluko and Chief Korede Duyile. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
