Nigeria has lost one of its most revered elder statesmen and moral compasses with the passing of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who died at the age of 100.
A quintessential leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Afenifere, Pa Fasoranti lived a century marked by an unwavering commitment to public service, democratic values, and regional development. Throughout his long and impactful life, he stood as a powerful voice for equity, justice, and good governance in Nigeria.
Born on May 11, 1926, in Uso, Ondo State, Pa Fasoranti built the foundation of his career in education. After attending Ondo Boys’ High School, Yaba Higher College, and the University College, Ibadan, he devoted decades to shaping young minds as a revered teacher and school administrator. He served as the founding principal of Iju-Itaogbolu Grammar School and went on to establish Akure High School and Omolere Nursery and Primary School.
His commitment to governance was equally distinguished. A staunch disciple of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s political philosophy, Pa Fasoranti served with distinction as the Commissioner for Finance in Ondo State under Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin during the Second Republic (1979–1983), establishing a reputation for prudent management and transparency.
In his later years, as the leader of Afenifere, his home in Akure remained a vital sanctuary for political leaders, policy-makers, and seekers of national direction, standing as a testament to his enduring influence and fatherly counsel.
Tributes have continued to pour in for the centenarian, celebrating his legacy as a beacon of integrity and wisdom who dedicated decades to fighting for the socio-political advancement of Yorubaland and the nation at large.
As the Fasoranti family, the Akure Kingdom, and the entire nation mourn this monumental loss, the footprints of honour, resilience, and selflessness he left behind will continue to inspire generations to come.
