Operatives of the Ilaro Division of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a suspect, Adewale Ogoemi Arojah, for allegedly impersonating a renowned cleric on Facebook and defrauding unsuspecting victims of over ₦18 million under the guise of offering spiritual assistance and prayers.
The arrest followed a formal complaint lodged on October 3, 2026, by a popular Facebook cleric, “Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun,” who alerted the police to fraudulent activities being carried out in his name through a cloned social media profile. Following the report, intelligence and detective operatives tracked the suspect to a village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where he was apprehended.
During interrogation, Arojah confessed to using the cleric’s identity to deliver fake prophecies and offer prayer services to vulnerable individuals across Nigeria and in the diaspora. Preliminary investigations revealed that he systematically targeted persons seeking spiritual help on the prophet’s page, gaining their trust before swindling them of millions of Naira.
The suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation, identification of potential accomplices, and eventual prosecution.
Commending the Ilaro division for their swift tactical response, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to dismantling cybercrime networks, while advising the public to verify social media accounts and exercise caution before transferring funds for spiritual services.
