The Lagos State Government has officially inaugurated the new Lagos Fresh Food Hub at Pen Cinema, Agege, in a major push to overhaul agricultural logistics, cut post-harvest losses, and stabilize food prices across the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu commissioned the mid-level facility, marking the third major addition to the state’s modern food distribution network alongside existing hubs in Mushin and Abijo. Projected to facilitate well over N5 billion in annual food transactions, the hub reflects a shift toward an organized, technology-supported agricultural supply chain for Nigeria’s largest urban population.
Spanning a total footprint of 7,000 square meters, the Agege Fresh Food Hub offers structured, hygienic facilities designed to move massive volumes of food efficiently. The core of the facility features a 4,000-square-meter trading floor capable of accommodating between 350 and 400 registered vendors.
To combat food spoilage, a major driver of rising food costs, the hub is equipped with 800 metric tonnes of dry storage capacity and approximately 300 metric tonnes of cold storage space. In addition, the development features an expanded, purpose-built seafood section, parking space for 80 to 90 vehicles, and 10 electric vehicle charging stations to support eco-friendly transport logistics.
The newly commissioned hub operates as a vital middle-tier node within Lagos State’s broader hub-and-spoke distribution model. Under this master plan, major produce will flow from the Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub at Ketu-Ereyun down to middle-level hubs like Agege and Mushin, bringing organized wholesale and retail distribution directly to local communities.
By streamlining supply chains and integrating standardized operational systems for quality control, inventory management, sanitation, and waste reduction, the facility aims to connect farmers, aggregators, wholesalers, institutional buyers, and consumers under a seamless trading environment. Full operational activities are expected to commence in six weeks following the onboarding of vendors and operational staff.
