Chelsea have officially completed the permanent signing of former England international forward Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion for a fee reported to be around £5 million.
The 35-year-old striker has agreed to a two-year contract through June 2028 and will wear the No. 18 shirt for the Blues. He immediately joined up with manager Xabi Alonso and the first-team squad for their ongoing pre-season preparations.
The move represents a deliberate shift in strategy for Chelsea, marking their first acquisition of an outfield player over the age of 26 for a transfer fee since 2022. Club officials view Welbeck’s leadership, high work rate, and top-flight experience as essential assets to complement their young attacking core.
Welbeck enters Stamford Bridge in impressive form, having scored 13 goals in 37 Premier League appearances for Brighton during the 2025–26 campaign.
Over a six-year stay at Brighton, Welbeck netted 51 goals in 201 appearances across all competitions. His broader career includes 400 Premier League appearances and silverware with Manchester United and Arsenal, alongside 42 caps and 16 goals for the England national team.
Speaking after the transfer was announced, Welbeck expressed immense pride in joining Chelsea, emphasizing his motivation to compete for major honors and contribute immediately to Alonso’s tactical setup.
