The Federal Government, through the Department of State Services (DSS), has filed criminal charges against former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, before the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division, over alleged unlawful interception of communication.
According to the charge sheet dated February 16, 2026, El-Rufai is accused of admitting during a televised interview on Arise TV that he and his associates unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The charges include alleged violations of Section 12(1) and Section 27(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, as well as Section 131(2) of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
The prosecution alleged that the acts compromised public safety and national security, and created apprehension among members of the public.
The Federal Government, through the DSS, is seeking to prosecute the former governor in accordance with the relevant laws, while further court proceedings are expected to determine the outcome of the case.
It will be recalled that it was widely reported a few days ago that Nasir El-Rufai allegedly confessed during a national television interview on Arise TV to having cloned the phone of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
