Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party and a top contender in the African Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has issued a strong warning ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that votes must count and those who undermine the process will face legal consequences.
Obi made the statement in a post on his official account on X, formerly known as Twitter, in what appears to be one of his strongest remarks yet on electoral integrity.
In the post, Obi urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively monitor the voting and result collation process at polling units.
He wrote: “Our Votes Must Count
Unlike in the past, in 2027 our votes MUST count, and all those who are there not to count the votes will be counted among those destroying Nigeria. I encourage everyone to remain at the polling units after voting to count and witness the counting and transmission of results. Those who refuse to allow the votes count will be made to count the full weight of the law against rigging. Let me reiterate: if you do not count our votes, we will count you among those who destroy our democracy, thereby destroying our future, and you must answer to the law.”
The former Anambra State governor’s message is widely seen as a direct warning to electoral officials and institutions, including the Independent National Electoral Commission, as political activities gradually begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 polls.
Obi’s statement has already sparked mixed reactions across the political landscape, with supporters describing it as a call for electoral vigilance, while critics interpret it as a confrontational tone capable of heightening political tension.
The third place holder of 2023 presidential election has consistently maintained that electoral transparency remains critical to Nigeria’s democratic future and has repeatedly called for reforms to ensure credibility in future elections across Nigeria.
