Residents and passers-by on Monday defied safety warnings after a tanker loaded with diesel overturned on the Liverpool Bridge in the Apapa area of Lagos State, spilling its contents across the roadway.
Following the accident, several people were seen scooping the spilled diesel into containers despite the obvious danger posed by the highly flammable substance. The incident caused tension and raised fears of a possible fire outbreak on the busy bridge.
Emergency responders and traffic officials swiftly moved to the scene to secure the area and prevent further danger. Traffic was temporarily diverted while efforts were made to control the spill and keep residents away from the affected section.
Authorities later commenced the evacuation of the fallen tanker and containment of the diesel spill, urging motorists to exercise patience.
They also warned the public against risking their lives by engaging in unsafe activities at accident scenes, stressing that such actions could result in loss of lives and property.
Traffic flow was gradually restored after the situation was brought under control.
