Residents of Rusau Village in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State have been thrown into shock following the arrest of a 23-year-old University of Jos (UNIJOS) student, David Nanpon Timmap, for allegedly killing and burying his colleague in a shallow grave inside his room.
The suspect, a 300-level student of the institution, was said to have murdered his friend and fellow student, Peter Mata Mafurai, aged 22, before secretly burying his remains in a grave he dug within his apartment.
According to the Plateau State Police Command, the crime was uncovered after neighbours raised an alarm over the sudden disappearance of the victim, prompting a search that led investigators to Timmap’s residence.
Spokesperson for the Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, who confirmed the incident, said officers from the Anglo-Jos Division arrested the suspect after receiving a distress call. Upon arrival, police discovered freshly disturbed earth inside the suspect’s room, leading to the shocking recovery of the victim’s body.
“The suspect, David Nanpon Timmap, a student of the University of Jos, was arrested after intelligence revealed he had buried his colleague inside his room. The corpse was exhumed and deposited at the hospital for autopsy,” Alabo said.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear, though investigations are ongoing. The police have assured the public that justice will be served and that the suspect will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage among students and residents of Jos, with many describing it as one of the most gruesome crimes in the university’s history.
Authorities of the University of Jos have yet to issue an official statement as of press time, but sources within the campus said the management is cooperating fully with the police in the investigation.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Jos University Teaching Hospital morgue for further examination.
