The Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday arraigned Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, his younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and ten others before an Abuja court over their involvement in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held in the Federal Capital Territory on Monday.
According to court filings made available by former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, the accused persons were charged with inciting public disturbance and breaching the peace during the protest.
The police alleged that the demonstrators obstructed free movement, disrupted traffic flow, and chanted war songs while demanding the unconditional release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, had earlier confirmed on Channels Television’s Politics Today that Ejimakor, Prince Kanu, and others would be prosecuted after investigations were concluded.
Hundeyin explained that the arrests were made after the group allegedly attempted to access restricted areas during the protest. “We arrested Nnamdi Kanu’s brother and his lawyer because they insisted on accessing restricted areas. Alongside them, six others were also arrested around the Transcorp area for the same reason, making a total of eight suspects,” he said.
He maintained that the police would not condone any action capable of disrupting public order or disobeying lawful directives.
