The Chairman of Owo Local Government Area, Hon. Tope Omolayo, has been suspended indefinitely with immediate effect by the Owo Local Government Legislative Council over allegations of gross misconduct and financial impropriety.
The suspension, which was among the key resolutions reached during the Council’s sitting on Tuesday in Owo, was supported by a two-thirds majority of the 11 councillors, under the leadership of the House Leader, Hon. Doyin Adebayo.
According to the resolution, the Legislative Council took the decision in a bid to uphold good governance, accountability, and transparency in the administration of the local government.
The councillors accused Hon. Omolayo of financial irregularities, violation of budgetary and internally generated revenue (IGR) regulations, disrespect to traditional rulers, and conduct unbecoming of a public official.
Pending the outcome of investigations, the Council announced that Hon. Hamed Ibrahim, the Vice Chairman, would assume office as Acting Chairman of Owo Local Government Area.
The resolution further directed the Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA) to effect all necessary administrative adjustments, including the change of bank signatories to recognize Hon. Ibrahim as the Acting Chairman.
Additionally, all government properties in Hon. Omolayo’s possession are to be handed over to the HLGA without delay.
In a statement signed by the councillors, the Council assured residents that the suspension was not a political witch-hunt but a move to protect public trust and ensure effective service delivery.
“This suspension is necessary to ensure accountability and restore confidence in local governance,” the resolution read in part.
The Council also urged residents of Owo Local Government Area to remain calm and cooperative as the investigation proceeds, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and the welfare of the people.
