A courtroom in Tirana, the Albanian capital, descended into chaos on Monday when a man on trial opened fire during proceedings, killing the presiding judge and injuring two others.
According to police, the assailant, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was standing trial before Appeals Court Judge Astrit Kalaja when he suddenly drew a firearm and opened fire.
Judge Kalaja was immediately rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries on the way, authorities confirmed in an official statement.
Two other victims a father and son who were parties to the same trial, also sustained gunshot wounds. They were taken to the hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
Police said the suspect was swiftly overpowered and arrested at the scene.
Local media reports suggest the violent outburst was linked to a property dispute, with the defendant allegedly acting out in anger after realizing he was likely to lose the case.
The shocking incident has sent ripples across Albania’s legal community, raising fresh concerns over courtroom security and the safety of judicial officers.
