Chelsea have secured the signing of English striker Liam Delap from relegated Premier League side Ipswich Town for a reported £30 million. The 22-year-old, who scored 12 goals in his debut top-flight season, joins the Blues on a six-year deal, beating off competition from Manchester United and Everton.
Delap, a former Manchester City forward and England U21 international, impressed despite Ipswich’s struggles and immediate return to the Championship. His move bolsters Chelsea’s attacking options ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where they will face Flamengo, LAFC, and ES Tunis from June 14.
“I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on,” Delap said, expressing excitement about developing under head coach Enzo Maresca.
Chelsea return to the Champions League next season and recently lifted the Conference League trophy under Maresca’s leadership.
