Residents of Pelebe area in Ogunti Camp, Akure, Ondo State, were thrown into panic late Wednesday night after suspected gunmen abducted a woman and shot her husband during an attack on the community.
The incident occurred at Pelebe along Oda Road, about 12.6 kilometres from the Government House in Alagbaka, a distance that usually takes about 22 minutes by road.
According to local sources, the assailants stormed the quiet settlement under the cover of darkness, firing sporadic gunshots that sent residents fleeing for safety.
Eyewitnesses said the couple was outside their residence when the attackers struck. The husband was reportedly shot and left wounded, while his wife was forcibly taken away to an unknown destination by the gunmen.
Neighbours who heard the gunshots rushed to the scene after the attackers had fled. The injured man was later taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment, while residents alerted security agencies.
As of the time of filing this report, security operatives were said to be making efforts to rescue the abducted woman and track down the perpetrators.
The latest incident has further heightened fears among residents of the state capital, who have continued to express concern over the rising wave of criminal activities.
Observers note that insecurity in Ondo State has escalated in recent times despite the investments and measures introduced by the administration of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to strengthen security across the state. Residents are now calling for stronger security presence and proactive measures to curb the growing threat.
