The sudden death of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the November 16, 2024 Ondo State election, has sparked controversy as allegations of foul play emerge.
Akingboye, aged 60, reportedly passed away last Wednesday at his Victoria Garden City (VGC) residence in Lagos.
His Personal Assistant and Media Adviser, Oyeniyi Iwakun, confirmed the development in a statement describing the deceased as “a man of unwavering integrity, an accomplished businessman, philanthropist, visionary leader, and community builder who lived a fulfilled and purposeful life.”
The statement added that he is survived by his wives, children, grandchildren, and siblings, with burial arrangements to be announced later.
However, questions have been raised about the circumstances of his passing. A source told SaharaReporters that Akingboye’s death may not have been natural, alleging that one of his wives pushed him from a balcony during a domestic dispute.
Images of his body, circulating on social media, appeared to show bruises and deep cuts on his head and neck.
“The SDP candidate in Ondo state who recently died was killed by his wife. She allegedly killed him by pushing him off the balcony,” the source claimed.
In response, police authorities confirmed that a discreet investigation has been launched. “We are committed to leaving no stone unturned in unraveling the circumstances surrounding his death,” a police spokesperson said.
Civil society organizations, activists, and concerned Nigerians have also called for transparency in the inquiry, warning against any attempts to cover up the incident.
Akingboye, popularly known as OBA, was CEO of Benshore Maritime, Clog Oil Systems, and President of WeAfrica Group. He held the traditional title of Olowomeye I of Ikaleland.
He had contested the November 2024 governorship election in Ondo State against Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and 12 others.
His sudden death has thrown both political and business circles into mourning, even as the investigation continues.
