President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, following their dramatic 3-2 victory over hosts Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Saturday night in Rabat.
The Falcons, who were trailing 2-0 at halftime after goals from Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy, mounted a spirited comeback in the second half. Esther Okoronkwo sparked the revival with a well-taken penalty before assisting Folashade Ijamilusi for the equalizer. The winning goal came late in the game through Jennifer Echegini, who pounced on a loose ball from a set piece to seal a historic win.
With this victory, Nigeria has now extended its dominance in women’s football on the continent, claiming a record 10th WAFCON title.
President Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, praised the Super Falcons for their resilience, unity, and determination in overcoming a tough Moroccan side in front of a home crowd.
“The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit,” the President said.
“With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for. The nation looks forward to welcoming our champions. Congratulations! Nigeria celebrates you.”
The President’s message comes as the country erupts in celebration, marking another milestone in Nigerian football history and a proud moment for the nation on the global stage.
