The Ondo State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive firearms proficiency training programme for police constables as part of efforts to enhance professionalism, operational efficiency and responsible policing across the state.
The training, which began on Monday at the 17 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron Base in Akure, was declared open by the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Felix Ohagwu.
He described the exercise as a strategic investment aimed at building a disciplined, intelligence-driven and service-oriented police force capable of effectively protecting lives and property.
Addressing participants, the Commissioner said the programme is designed to provide officers with the knowledge, practical skills and ethical orientation required for the safe handling, lawful use and proper maintenance of firearms in the discharge of their constitutional duties.
He stressed that firearms are tools for safeguarding lives and property and must never be used for intimidation, abuse or reckless conduct. According to him, the lawful deployment of weapons requires the highest level of discipline, professionalism, restraint and accountability.
CP Ohagwu noted that the initiative aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who has continued to prioritise regular capacity building programmes as part of ongoing police reforms aimed at improving operational effectiveness while ensuring respect for the rule of law and the fundamental rights of citizens.
The training curriculum includes both theoretical and practical sessions covering firearm safety principles, weapon handling procedures, loading and unloading techniques, carrying and storage protocols, weapon maintenance and the legal framework regulating the use of force under the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and the Nigeria Police Force Standing Orders.
The Commissioner urged the trainee constables to participate actively and approach the programme with discipline and commitment, noting that the quality of policing in Ondo State depends largely on the competence, professionalism and ethical conduct of officers.
He also charged instructors to maintain the highest standards of professionalism while ensuring strict compliance with safety procedures throughout the exercise.
The Police Command expressed confidence that the training would produce better-equipped officers capable of carrying out their responsibilities safely, professionally and in full compliance with the law, while strengthening public confidence in policing across Ondo State.
