Suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists have launched coordinated attacks on a Nigerian Army base, a police post and a hospital in Borno State, leaving several people dead and injured while heightening fears over renewed insurgent activities in the North-East.
The attacks, which occurred in separate locations, were said to have been carefully coordinated to overwhelm security operatives. Residents reported heavy gunfire and explosions as the insurgents attempted to force their way into the military formation and other strategic facilities.
Security sources disclosed that troops of Operation Hadin Kai mounted a fierce resistance, engaging the terrorists in an intense gun battle that lasted several hours. Although the attackers inflicted casualties on security personnel, they were eventually repelled and prevented from taking control of the military base.
At the police post, officers also came under heavy attack but fought alongside military reinforcements and local security volunteers to repel the insurgents. The attackers were forced to retreat after suffering casualties during the exchange of gunfire.
The terrorists also targeted a hospital in the area, triggering panic among patients, medical workers and residents. Health workers quickly evacuated vulnerable patients to safer locations while security personnel secured the facility to prevent further damage.
Several security personnel were reportedly killed during the coordinated assaults, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries and have been taken to medical facilities for treatment. The exact number of civilian casualties has yet to be officially confirmed.
Military authorities have since launched clearance operations across the affected areas, with ground troops and air assets pursuing the fleeing terrorists in nearby communities and forest enclaves.
The renewed attacks come amid growing concerns over an increase in insurgent activities in Borno State, despite sustained military offensives against Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Security has been reinforced around military formations, police facilities and public institutions across the state as authorities intensify efforts to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among residents.
The Nigerian military has assured citizens that operations are ongoing to neutralise the terrorists and ensure that those responsible for the attacks are brought to justice.
