The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), Delta State, has been thrown into mourning following the tragic killing of a 100-level student, allegedly stabbed to death by his elder brother after a disagreement that reportedly began over a pair of bathroom slippers.
The victim, identified as 19-year-old Joseph Obiere, was allegedly attacked by his 21-year-old elder brother, Fejiro Obiere, who is also a student of the institution. Both brothers were said to be living together in accommodation arranged by their parents.
According to the Delta State Police Command, the disagreement initially started over bathroom slippers and escalated into a physical fight. Neighbours reportedly intervened and separated the brothers, believing the matter had been resolved.
However, the confrontation resumed shortly afterwards behind their residence, where the elder brother allegedly armed himself with a kitchen knife and stabbed Joseph multiple times. The victim sustained severe injuries and died despite efforts to save his life.
Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said the suspect fled immediately after the attack and remains at large. He disclosed that detectives have launched a manhunt to apprehend him and bring him to justice.
Edafe described the incident as a heartbreaking family tragedy, saying the parents had lost one son to death while the other would face prosecution for murder once arrested.
He added that investigators are examining whether drug abuse or cult-related activities may have contributed to the suspect’s violent behaviour.
The killing has sent shockwaves across the FUPRE community, with students expressing grief and disbelief that a disagreement over something as ordinary as bathroom slippers could end in the death of a sibling.
While the slippers reportedly triggered the altercation, investigators believe there may have been deeper unresolved issues between the brothers.
University authorities have assured students and parents that the situation is under control, while the Delta State Police Command continues its search for the fleeing suspect.
