Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, has said Nigeria is on the verge of a rail revolution under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, describing the ambitious initiative as a testament to the President’s vision for the future.
According to Dare, nearly 10 government agencies and departments are collaborating on the proposed project under the direct supervision of President Tinubu, whom he described as a leader committed to transforming the country’s infrastructure landscape.
“This is President Tinubu at work. A President with a vision for the future. Almost 10 different government agencies and departments are involved under the direct supervision of President Tinubu. Just like America’s rail revolution, Nigeria’s rail revolution is on its way,” Dare said.
The presidential aide’s remarks came amid plans for what is being described as one of Nigeria’s most ambitious infrastructure projects in decades , a proposed $60 billion high-speed rail network spanning approximately 4,000 kilometres.
The project is designed to connect major economic hubs across the country and is expected to significantly enhance transportation, facilitate trade and deepen regional integration.
The proposed network envisions a modern electrified or gas-powered rail system capable of operating at speeds between 200 and 350 kilometres per hour, far exceeding the capacity of existing standard-gauge lines, including the Lagos-Ibadan route.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to modernise Nigeria’s railway system, which has long depended on aging narrow-gauge tracks.
Although the proposal has generated widespread interest and optimism, the project remains in the planning and review stage as of mid-2026, with construction yet to commence.
Stakeholders believe the completion of the network could usher in a new era of economic growth and connectivity, positioning Nigeria among countries with advanced rail transportation systems.
