Two people sustained varying degrees of injuries on Saturday after a fully loaded trailer reportedly lost control and rammed into multiple vehicles on the busy Onitsha Bridge, causing panic and heavy traffic gridlock.
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred during peak traffic hours when the trailer, suspected to have suffered brake failure, collided with at least three vehicles before coming to a halt in the middle of the bridge.
Emergency responders and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) quickly arrived at the scene to evacuate the injured victims to a nearby hospital, while efforts were made to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow.
A commuter who witnessed the incident described the crash as “sudden and terrifying,” noting that motorists had little time to escape the impact.
Authorities confirmed that no fatalities were recorded, but warned drivers to exercise caution, especially on heavy-duty routes prone to congestion and mechanical failures.
FRSC officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, while traffic has since been restored on the bridge after hours of disruption.
