The Federal Government has announced plans to renovate the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja and commence the comprehensive redevelopment of the National Stadium in Surulere as part of efforts to revive sports infrastructure across the country.
The government said the move was aimed at restoring the country’s sporting facilities to international standards and creating an enabling environment for athletes to thrive.
According to officials, the planned renovation of the Abuja stadium will focus on upgrading key facilities, including the main bowl, athletics tracks, seating areas, lighting systems and other supporting infrastructure.
The National Stadium in Surulere, once regarded as one of Nigeria’s foremost sporting arenas, is also expected to undergo major reconstruction and modernization after years of neglect.
The Federal Government noted that the projects would not only boost sports development but also create employment opportunities and attract local and international sporting events to Nigeria.
Sports stakeholders and fans have continued to commend the initiative, describing it as a major step toward repositioning the nation’s sports sector and restoring the glory of Nigerian sports facilities.
The Federal Government added that the nationwide sports infrastructure renewal programme would also cover major stadiums in Enugu, Kaduna and Kano as part of efforts to modernise sporting facilities across the country.
Officials said the initiative is designed to restore the stadiums to international standards, encourage grassroots sports development and position Nigeria to host major continental and global sporting events.
