The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise, shifting it to a period after the 2027 general election.
The decision was reached following a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Friday in Abuja, where key electoral matters were deliberated.
In a statement issued by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission said the exercise, though critical, would no longer hold as earlier planned.
INEC explained that the voter revalidation exercise is an essential aspect of its constitutional mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters. The process is designed to verify existing voter records, ensure accuracy of personal data, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, and strengthen the overall integrity of the voter database.
The Commission noted that the exercise would also provide registered voters the opportunity to confirm their details and make necessary corrections where required.
Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to delivering free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections, assuring Nigerians that all necessary measures would be put in place to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general election.
The Commission, however, did not state a new date for the exercise beyond indicating that it would take place after the general polls.
