The Lagos State Police Command has launched a forensic investigation into the death of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State, who died under controversial circumstances at his Victoria Garden City (VGC) residence in Lagos.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), to handle the case discreetly.
Detectives, supported by the Command’s Crime Scene Investigation team, have visited the late politician’s residence, cordoned off the area, and deployed scientific tools to secure and analyse evidence.
Public suspicion grew after images circulated showing bruises on Akingboye’s head, raising concerns that his death may not have been natural.
Reports also alleged that a large sum of money, estimated at about N210 million, was withdrawn from his bank accounts shortly after his passing, though the police have yet to confirm these claims.
The circumstances surrounding his death have triggered outrage among family members, political associates, and civil society groups, who are demanding transparency and accountability.
Human rights advocates have also called on the police to ensure a thorough and credible investigation that will reveal the true cause of Akingboye’s death.
As at now, the Lagos police maintain that forensic investigations are ongoing, while the official autopsy report is still being awaited.
