Tension erupted in Akure, Ondo State, on Wednesday as thugs allegedly loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC) launched an attack on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during a ward meeting.
The incident, which occurred at Ward 8 in Akure South Local Government Area, left three ADC members injured, while several others narrowly escaped unhurt.
Confirming the attack, the ADC Chairman in Ondo State, Asiwaju Wole Ademoyegun, described the development as “a brazen act of political intimidation” targeted at silencing opposition voices in the state.
“We were holding the ward meeting when some hoodlums, believed to be sympathisers of the APC, stormed the venue and attacked us. Three of our members were badly injured and have been rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention,” Ademoyegun said.
He added that the matter had been reported to the police. According to him, the case was initially lodged at B Division, Oke-Aro, but was later transferred to the Area Command for further action.
Despite the severity of the attack, the ADC chairman expressed concern that no arrests had been made, heightening fears among party members over their safety ahead of the electioneering season.
As of the time of filing this report, police authorities had yet to issue a statement on the incident.
