Kwara United and Rivers Angels emerged champions of the 2025 President Federation Cup after two pulsating finals decided by penalty shootouts at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos on Saturday.
Kwara United claimed the men’s title after edging out Nigeria National League (NNL) side, Abakaliki FC, 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time. The victory not only handed Kwara United their first Federation Cup title but also secured them a spot in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
Abakaliki FC, the surprise package of the tournament, had stunned giants Enyimba in the round of 16 and dispatched top-tier clubs Nasarawa United and Ikorodu City en route to the final. However, their fairytale run came to an end as two missed penalties denied them the historic trophy.
In the women’s final, Rivers Angels staged a remarkable comeback to secure their 10th Federation Cup title, defeating Nasarawa Amazons 4-2 on penalties after an intense 2-2 draw in regulation time.
Nasarawa Amazons stormed to an early 2-0 lead through a brace from Rukayat Shobowale, but Rivers Angels clawed their way back into the game with second-half goals from Taiwo Ajibade and Taiwo Afolabi.
The shootout saw Rivers Angels hold their nerve, with goalkeeper Anderline Mgbechi making a crucial save and later stepping up to seal the victory with the final kick.
Rivers Angels have now won the Federation Cup in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2024, and 2025, reaffirming their dominance in Nigerian women’s football.
