Remo Stars produced a ruthless performance to overpower Ikorodu City 4-1 on Sunday, moving within touching distance of the 2024/25 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title.
Already confirmed as champions two weeks ago, Remo Stars marched into the field for their coronation day with a guard of honour from their visitors inside an electrifying stadium filled with thousands of supporters who came to witness their historic day.
Shockingly the packed stadium dominated home fans was silenced in the 15th minute when Ikorodu City captain, Tosin Oyedokun, sent a pile driver which was mishandled by Serge Obassa, for the visitors lead.
After an early flurry of missed chances from Olamilekan Adedayo and Sodiq Ismail, the breakthrough finally came in the 37th minute when Sikiru Alimi calmly slotted home to score his fifth goal of the season, reigniting the momentum for the home side.
Just four minutes later, Remo Stars took the lead for the first time in the game as Ibrahim Shuaib finished clinically, latching onto a perfectly timed assist from Babatunde Bello.
The second half saw Bello turn goal scorer, adding the third with a composed strike that sent the home crowd into celebration mode and sealed a dominant display from the Sky Blue Stars.
The win was not only a statement of intent from the Ikenne-based club but also a significant blow to Ikorodu City’s continental ambitions. The visitors now sit on 56 points, trailing third-placed Abia Warriors by four points, with just one game left in the season , a gap that may prove too large to close.
With this commanding win, Remo Stars solidified their grip on the NPFL title race and look set to be crowned champions, pending results from the final matchday.
