The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, exercising its constitutional authority under the amended 1999 Constitution.
The decision follows the earlier endorsement by 243 members of the House of Representatives.
With the approval, President Tinubu is empowered to implement emergency measures, with a mandatory review of the situation at any time but no later than six months.
The National Assembly has constituted a joint committee from both chambers to oversee the administration of affairs in the state during the emergency period.
Additionally, the Senate resolved to establish a mediation committee comprising eminent Nigerians to address the political crisis in Rivers State.
The approval followed a closed-door session where senators deliberated extensively on the matter.
