President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for another five-year term.
Marwa, who was first appointed in January 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, will now remain in office until 2031. Before leading the NDLEA, he served as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse between 2018 and 2020.
A former military governor of Lagos and Borno States, Marwa is a distinguished officer of the Nigerian Armed Forces and an alumnus of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy.
His career spans several key military postings, including brigade major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of Army Staff, Deputy Defence Adviser in Washington, D.C., and Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
Marwa also holds postgraduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University.
His tenure at the NDLEA has been marked by major breakthroughs, including the arrest of over 73,000 drug traffickers and barons and the seizure of more than 15 million kilogrammes of hard drugs. The agency has also intensified nationwide campaigns against drug abuse under his leadership.
President Tinubu described the renewal as a vote of confidence in Marwa’s leadership and ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse across the country, urging him to remain relentless in pursuing drug syndicates targeting Nigerian youths.
