The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakusehin, the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, describing him as a symbol of unity, patriotism, and distinguished service to both his people and the nation.
In an official statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the Party’s National Working Committee (NWC), under the leadership of Acting National Chairman Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar, extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Oyo State.
Oba Olakusehin, who once served as a federal legislator in the short-lived 3rd Republic on the platform of the SDP, was also a military officer in his earlier years. The Party lauded his contributions to governance and national development, noting that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
The SDP highlighted with pride its historic contribution to the Olubadan institution, stating that it had produced three successive Olubadans ,the late Oba Lekan Balogun, the recently departed Oba Owolabi Olakusehin, and the current Otun Olubadan, His Excellency (Senator) Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a former Governor of Oyo State and distinguished Senator, who is next in line to ascend the revered royal stool.
“We are immensely proud of our role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic and traditional institutions,” the statement read. “Oba Olakusehin was a bridge-builder and a devoted servant of the people whose memory will remain evergreen.”
The Party concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the late monarch’s soul, and for continued peace, prosperity, and leadership in Ibadanland.
