A promise to train a young woman in content creation has ended in tragedy after a 20-year-old woman allegedly raped by a popular Asaba-based content creator later died after an apparent suicide.
The victim, identified as Favour Agbro, reportedly travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, following an invitation from Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba.” The suspect had allegedly offered to mentor and train her in content creation through a programme he promoted on his social media platforms.
According to accounts of the incident, shortly after arriving in Asaba, the young woman was allegedly taken to a hotel by the suspect, where she was sexually assaulted and physically attacked. She later returned home in a distressed state and narrated the alleged ordeal to her parents.
In the days that followed, Favour reportedly struggled with severe emotional trauma. Before her death, she recorded a video in which she detailed the alleged assault and the emotional pain she had endured since the incident.
She subsequently ingested a toxic substance in an apparent suicide attempt and later died despite efforts by medical personnel to save her life.
The tragic development sparked widespread outrage, with the victim’s video circulating on social media and prompting calls for justice from Nigerians and civil society groups.
Following the public outcry, the Delta State Police Command launched an investigation and arrested Ifeanyi Ogbonna.
Police confirmed that the suspect is in custody and assisting investigators, adding that the case remains under investigation and that anyone found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The case has renewed concerns over sexual violence and the need for stronger safeguards for young people seeking career opportunities through online platforms. It is important to note that the rape allegation remains before the courts, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
